Mr Brown - 'Oil Baron'

Written on 30 November 2015

Finally released after hanging about digitally since May comes the 2nd release on the UK's Headcount Records via KingUnderground. Following on from ex-Caveman MCM's 'Rhymes Equate Actual LIfe' we get a posse cut featuring feat Cappo, Jehst, Pneeumatic, Emcee Killa, Solar Black, Teslas Ghost, Ray Vendetta, MNSR Frites, Brotherman, Confucius MC, Kashmere and Life MC. At 8 emcees they each get 8bars and at 5:51mins on a 45, methinks they are pushing the friendship a tad. It's an unhurried beat dominated by dark horns samples with the occasional bright trumpet. Definitely for fans of posse tracks and those who appreciate the varying British styles. Scratches and beat by Mr Brown. Limited to 250 copies.

Japanese beatmaker KAZAHAYA hooks up with Canadian female soul trio THE SPANDETTES for 'Broad Smile'. Need a bridging track from hip hop into soul? Then this could be the ticket. Heavy drums with swirling violins over a 112bpm tempo. I can't say I have many tracks like this. Whereas Kazahaya has released 4 x 45s on the UK based BREAKIN' BREAD label, mostly with soul singers, this will be via his own label KZRECORDS available via his Discogs account.

Out of Le Havre France comes the second forty five release from Djar One. You might remember his dope little release with Dragon Fli Empire earlier in the year. This brand new joint is very similar in style, and a killer dancefloor party track at that!

The A side features lyrics from British MC Carpetface over a funky uptempo latin jam with some heavy Hip hop drums. I really like the production on this. It reminds of something Ugly Duckling would use, and that's no shot to Djar One but a compliment. The production is really nicely layered, dense but balanced, and really fun sounding - alternating between a big brassy chorus, and a funky little rhodes loop in the verse.

The B Side takes things is a slightly differnet direction, with the track "The Psycho Break" evidently named after the fuzzed out guitar sample that maked up the loop. This one is an instrumental which features some very dope cuts from Masta Moon and Incredeeple over some huge sounding B Boy drums.

This release is limited to a press of 300, and will be available from early December at all good outlets.

AG - 48 Bars

Written on 24 September 2015

This came out a few months ago, but deserves a mention. A conceptual record by DJ Nice from out of Toulouse, France. Using the same beat on both sides, but with DITC member AG on the A and French emcee N-Jin on the B.

Apart from the fact that AG is on the mic, the other reason to grab it is because after the 48bars finish, the deejays both go sick with different scratch patterns. DJ Duke (from legendary French hardcore act Assassin) on the English language side and DJ Skandela on side Francais.

Iceski and Merlin - Nuff A Dem

Written on 24 September 2015

One of the best Britcore tracks I've heard in years. If you are unfamiliar with that unique British spawned style, think...intense uptempo overpowering beats, insane manic scratching & intense rapping. A style that helped influence Australian acts like Def Wish Cast and Blades of Hades.

'Nuff A Dem' features Iceski from Criminal Minds, with guest verses by Polish born MC Gambit (formerly of Swiss based crew Last Resort) and Uncle Mic Nitro. Production by Hamburg based Merlin of Sublime Wizardry. And no, its not Smiley Culture's nephew who rapped on the 1988 classic 'Megablast' by Bomb the Bass. The flip 'Check It' gets props because it samples some dialogue and screams from Lucio Fulci's nightmarish 1981 zombie film 'The Beyond'. DJ Tones and Highfly execute the cuts.

This is the second 7" on the Show & Prove label, which is only 3 deep in its catalogue. From the forthcoming full length 'Enter the Dragon'.

You can hear the tracks, though it is now sold out on vinyl on their Bandcamp page, but still available over at Discogs.

Substantial - Follow the Master

Written on 24 September 2015

Maryland emcee SUBSTANTIAL drops a very limited edition 45 on sublabel ORIGU, related to the funk imprint Our Label.

The rolling drums on the 88bpm tempoed A Side 'Follow the Master' were produced by Washington, DC production duo The Other Guys. The vocal refain on the chorus reminds me of Masta Ace's 'Go Where I Send Thee', so that is never a bad thing. The even more relaxed flip 'Cool Mornings' is more of a Summery tune with female chorus and production comes from Algorhythm.

Both have been previously available digitally on separate releases, but making their debut vinyl appearance on this 500 pressed edition. 100 of those have been signed by Substantial and are only available via his Bandcamp page.

Available here via the Origu cartel page.

Postage is a tad more expensive at the Bandcamp page.
